Lycopene, a single nutrient is widely used for men suffering from issues related to the prostate gland. As we age, we find a lot of changes in our body that are not in our control; some are due to external factors, and some due to hormonal changes. For most men, one of those changes would include an increase in the prostate gland which also leads to a problem with the urinary tract.

What Do We Mean By Prostate?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and the penis. It is responsible for producing and nourishing the fluid which carries the sperm. It also plays a major role in normal urine flow.

An enlarged prostate means the gland is increasing in size which makes it difficult to function normally and puts pressure on the urethra which affects the normal urine flow. It is also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and the cause for the same is unknown and it happens to almost all men above 50 years of age.

The prevalence of BPH is age-dependent, with initial development usually occurring after 40 years of age 1. By 60 years of age, its prevalence is greater than 50% and by age 85, the prevalence is as high as 90%.

Why is Prostate Health Important for Men?

Healthy and normal prostate function are important for men. As men age the prostate naturally grows, a condition known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men behind skin cancer. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Men should talk with their doctor regularly about prostate health

Lycopene is an antioxidant, which protects the body against free radical damage. The body does not naturally produce lycopene, it can only be obtained through diet. Lycopene is a phytochemical that helps to support prostate health and provides antioxidant support for cardiovascular health.

Prostate disorders include inflammation (prostatitis), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate cancer. A research group at the University of Illinois embarked on a program of investigating prostate health issues related to dietary intake of tomatoes and their red pigment, a carotenoid named lycopene after the genus Lycopersicon. It was observed that the incidence of aggressive prostate cancer declined with increasing plasma lycopene concentration.

One study also showed slow progression of BPH in participants, lycopene also helps lower the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) connected to prostate inflammation. One of the studies from the paper has suggested that lycopene does slow down the progression of BPH by lowering the prostate-specific antigen (PSA).

Look in your food to include lycopene-rich food with fat like avocado, nuts, oil, or multivitamins which contains lycopene in their formulation.
