Whey isolate is typically isolated from concentrate using one of two primary methods.

Ion exchange will produce a high-quality protein but may omit other health benefits of whey.
MICROFILTRATION: This method uses fine high-tech ceramic filters to gently isolate whey proteins from the fat, lactose and denatured whey (inactive protein). The filters are called micro-filters or ultra-filters because the size of the filter’s holes is microscopic. This is a physical way of removing other constituent parts from the protein, as opposed to the chemical process of ion exchange. Microfiltration techniques allow for the production of very high protein content (over 90%), the retention of important subtractions (like immunoglobulins), extremely low fat, lactose, and cholesterol content, with virtually no denatured proteins. Gram for gram, it has a higher protein content than concentrates and about the same protein content as ion-exchange whey protein, without the losses of important subfractions of the whey, but it costs more to produce.
